Prioritizing Fixes

Prioritizing Fixes

With multiple SEO issues to address, it's important to prioritize effectively. Not all issues are created equal—some have a much larger impact on your rankings and traffic.

The Prioritization Matrix

High Impact Priority 1
Quick wins
Do these first!
Priority 2
Major projects
Plan and schedule
Low Impact Priority 3

Issue Importance Levels

High Importance

Critical issues that significantly impact rankings or user experience.

  • Missing or empty titles
  • Missing H1 tags
  • HTTPS issues
  • Robots.txt blocking content
  • Very slow page speed
  • Mobile usability problems
Medium Importance

Issues that affect optimization but aren't critical.

  • Title length issues
  • Missing meta descriptions
  • Heading hierarchy problems
  • Missing image alt text
  • Low content word count
  • Internal linking issues
Low Importance

Minor issues or best practice suggestions.

  • Favicon missing
  • Meta keywords (ignored by Google)
  • Minor performance tweaks
  • Optional structured data
  • Social meta tags

Recommended Fix Order

  1. Critical Technical Issues HTTPS, crawlability, robots.txt, severe errors
  2. Title Tags & H1s Missing, duplicate, or poorly optimized titles and headings
  3. Performance Issues Slow loading pages, especially on mobile
  4. Content Quality Thin content, duplicate content, missing meta descriptions
  5. User Experience Mobile issues, accessibility, broken links
  6. Enhancement Items Schema markup, social tags, minor optimizations

Impact vs Effort Examples

Fix Impact Effort Priority
Add missing title tags High Low Priority 1
Fix HTTPS issues High Low Priority 1
Improve page speed High Medium Priority 2
Add image alt text Medium Low Priority 1-2
Site redesign High High Priority 2
Add favicon Low Low Priority 3

Creating an Action Plan

  1. Review the report - Identify all issues by category and importance
  2. Group similar issues - Bundle related fixes (e.g., all title issues)
  3. Estimate effort - Quick fixes vs major projects
  4. Schedule work - Block time for Priority 1 items this week
  5. Track progress - Re-run reports to verify fixes

When Perfect Isn't Possible

A 100% score isn't always achievable or necessary. Focus on fixing high-impact issues first. An 85 with all critical issues resolved is better than chasing a perfect score on minor items.

Some issues may be intentional trade-offs:

  • Longer titles for clarity
  • Third-party scripts that add functionality
  • Design choices that slightly affect speed
  • Content length appropriate for the topic
